Digital Technologies Center
Test the future:
Simulation environment for your innovations
The Digital Technology Center is a key infrastructure investment designed to function as a living model of real utility systems.
The center provides a high-tech environment for demonstrations, testing, and training to accelerate the practical application of innovations in the sector.
By integrating IoT sensors, digital twins, and analytical tools, we enable operators and technology companies to validate their solutions more cost-effectively – in a secure yet realistic environment.
Goals of the center
- Reducing investment risk
- Faster implementation of digital solutions
- Informed choice of technology solutions
- Gaining confidence in transition to new technologies
The center is currently under construction on the premises of the Plovdiv Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Simulation models
Smart Water Network
The simulation model covers the entire water supply cycle – from water intake to the end user.
- RES integration: Shaft with hydraulic turbine for researching the possibilities of generating energy from excess pressure in the network.
- Hybrid pumping station: Integrated with a photovoltaic system and batteries for testing energy efficiency and intelligent load management.
- Network diagnostics: Specialized steel, cast iron, and polyethylene pipes for simulating and locating hidden leaks using acoustic sensors and ultrasonic flow meters.
Potable water purification (PPSP)
Modular installation allowing parallel testing of conventional and innovative technologies.
- Filtration and disinfection: Sand filters with variable filling and disinfection systems (UV, ozone, chlorination) supporting the concept of resource reuse.
- Flexible mixing: Comparative analysis of hydraulic, pipe, and electric mixers.
Wastewater treatment (WWTP)
Complete technological line for biological and mechanical treatment.
- Advanced treatment: Section for membrane technologies (reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration) and disposal of specific industrial pollutants.
- Biological stage: Bio-P reactor, denitrification, and nitrification with the possibility of testing various biofilters and aeration systems.

Digital architecture

The Digital Technology Center offers not only physical simulation infrastructure, but also a software-defined environment for:
- Modularity (Plug & Play): The design allows for easy integration of equipment from different manufacturers at the same point for comparative testing.
- SCADA integration: All sensors and actuators are connected to a single system for real-time monitoring and control.
- Digital twins: The ability to create virtual replicas of physical processes for predictive analysis.
Partnerships and development
The Digital Technology Center is accessible to:
- Water and sewerage operators:
For staff training and optimization of operating costs. - Technology companies:
For R&D activities and certification of new products. - Scientific institutions:
For joint projects in the field of circular economy and digital transition.
